Uses for Salt

OVEN SPILLS – Pour salt on the spill immediately. When cool, wipe clean.

SPILLED RAW EGG or SPILLED GREASE – Pour salt on the spill. Allow the salt to absorb the spill then sweep up.

GREASE FIRES can be extinguished by pouring salt on them.

BERRY STAINS ON HANDS – Combine salt and lemon juice to make a paste. Rub on hands to remove stains. Wash and dry hands.

REMOVE LIPSTICK from glassware or STAINS from mugs by rubbing the stains with salt and rinsing in hot water.

TO PREVENT FRUIT FROM DARKENING during preparation for canning, drop it into water containing 2 tablespoons each of salt and vinegar per gallon of water. Drain just before heating or packing raw.

NOSE DROPS (for a stuffy nose) – Mix 1/2 teaspoon salt with 1 cup water.

To STOP BLEEDING IN THE MOUTH from losing a tooth or to RELIEVE PAIN FROM MOUTH SORES, stir salt into warm water (about 1/2 teaspoon per cup); swish around in the mouth before spitting it out.

SET COLORS in new linens or clothes by adding 1/4 cup salt to the washer the first few times they are washed. Or soak them in a solution of 1/3 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup salt, and 2 quarts of water for one hour. Rinse until the water runs clear and then wash.

Get rid of SLUGS AND SNAILS in your garden by sprinkling salt on them.

Discourage WEEDS AND GRASS from growing in sidewalk and driveway cracks by sprinkling with salt and then pouring hot water over them.


PLAY DOUGH

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
1/2 cup table salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
Food coloring

In a heavy saucepan, stir together all but food coloring.  Add food coloring to obtain the desired color.  Beat with a hand mixer until absolutely smooth.  Cook on low heat until a ball forms, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat.  Knead dough on a flat surface until smooth and firm.  Allow to cool; store in an airtight container.
