- Make a home inventory list for insurance purposes.
- Learn the safest route from your home.
- Keep your vehicles’ gas tanks one quarter to one half full.
- Be prepared to evacuate before water levels reach your property.
- If time permits and it is safe, turn off electricity and water. Turn off gas at each appliance, not at the main inlet to the house.
- If time permits, move valuables to a higher level.
- If you get caught in your house, move to the second floor, or, if necessary, to the roof. Do not try to swim to safety.
- If outside, remember floods are deceptive. Do not attempt to walk through water that is more than knee deep. Better yet, stay out of flood waters and flowing water. As little as 6 inches of fast-moving water can cause an adult to fall.
- Be aware of animals, reptiles, and insects escaping flood waters.
- Do not drive where water is over the roads. Water may be hiding washed out sections of road or washed out bridges. As little as 12 inches of rushing water can sweep a car away.
- If your car stalls in flood waters, get out as soon as possible. Flood waters can rise rapidly and prevent you from getting out.
