Apocalypse Chow: How to Eat Well When the Power Goes Out by Jon Robertson with Robin Robertson is a very useful book with a creative approach to emergency preparedness. The author tells some personal hurricane stories (for a hurricane he should have evacuated for!) that help you relate to why being prepared makes sense and makes recovery a lot easier to deal with. He includes some preparedness information (a few things I take issue with, but as a whole the advice is sound) and has a lot of recipes. I have tried many and all have been very good. I prepared one recipe on a July day when the power went out at 4 in the afternoon, and was out for 10 hours, while my neighbors were looking for the nearest pizza delivery phone number! Some recipes don’t require cooking. The ones that do can be made in less than 20 minutes (he says 15) to conserve fuel. They are based on using a one-burner butane stove which can be used indoors with good ventilation. His wife, Robin, is a cookbook author and uses a butane stove for cooking demonstrations. Some of the recipes call for ingredients I haven’t been able to find but most ingredients are available. Many are not typical food storage items but, with planning, can make for a very varied menu. I personally like the book and recommend it.
